Report on Junior Round Robin Comp.

Mingara's junior group has completed its first round robin competition with a group of three locked in first place.

The Beeby brothers McCoy and Mason together with Dylan Calder each finished with 6/7. The competition introduced the players to tournament conditions including the use of chess clocks and the touch-move rule.

Mason could well have finished with a perfect score but for a misunderstanding over the use of the clock. He had a significant material advantage in his second-round loss on time to Dylan and will be looking forward to a rematch in the next comp.

Less experienced players Kingsley and Harrison Blake and Jack Perry each scored some points and showed pleasing improvement as the comp progressed.

One Day Competition for School Students.

This competition at Mingara Chess Club held on Monday afternoon, January 19th, was concluded with a presentation of prizes and awards including the Mingara Junior Cup awarded to the overall winner on the day, Tim Guo.

Timothy Guo turned in a picket-fence performance to win the inaugural Mingara Junior Championship. Twelve-year-old Timothy's perfect score saw him finish two points clear of the field. He will be the first to have his name engraved on the perpetual trophy.

The 16 entrants aged 9 to 17 came from all parts of the Central Coast to compete in the seven-round Swiss event, which included inter-round puzzle solving competitions. Prizes for first, second and third were awarded in each of two age divisions.

Division 1 comprised the eight oldest players and Division 2 the eight youngest. Timothy, a Mingara Recreation Club Sportsperson of the Month winner in 2008, was the youngest in Division 1 but finished with 7/7, ahead of Mustafa Aziz on 5/7 and Joshua Walsh and Dean Wills equal on 4/7.

The Division 2 prize-winners fared admirably against the older players, each finishing with a score that would have attracted a prize in the older group. Tom Williams led the way with 5/7, followed by Geoffrey Guo on 4.5/7 and Jack Wills on 4/7.
