Kevin Jones
In Memory
Kevin Jones the founding President of the Mingara Chess Club passed away on the 22nd of August at 10pm Sydney time while on holidays in England aged 71. Kevin was a keen organizer of chess tournaments. In 1988 he organized the Bicentennial Australian Chess Championships and at the time he passed away he was organizing the 2000 Australian Chess Championships. Kevin had involvement with many clubs as a director of play and tournament organizer. Some of those clubs included StGeorge Leagues club, Canterbury-Bankstown Leagues club, Concordia club and Stanmore Club in the Sydney area. On the NSW Central Coast Kevin was at different times President of 3 chess clubs
Central Coast Leagues Club Chess Club(late 80s),Tuggerah Lakes Memorial Club (mid 90s) and Mingara Chess Club (late 90s). Kevin was also the major force behind the formation of the last two clubs. Kevin also ran a Senior Citizen Chess Group during the week. My most fond memories of Kevin were watching him sitting down with a group of novice chessplayers with the demonstration board at the end of the table and Kevin showing them the basics of the openings. The Mingara Chess club will hold the 1999/2000 Australian Chess championship in the memory of Kevin Jones. Kevin was a tireless worker for chess and will be sorely missed.
