Report from Monday, October 26 - Points Handicap Tournament

The Points Handicap finished with fourth seed Gary Losh and sixth seed Hughie Winsor taking the top two spots, while top seed Tony Eves did well to finish third after starting on scratch.

Next Monday night brings the annual Club Lightning Championship, so be ready to be entertained by plenty of time-pressured blunders. The defending champion is John Nutter, who took the event one point clear of outright second placegetter Ivan Kodzoman.

The club's AGM has been set for 8pm on Monday, November 9.

Report from Monday, October 19 - Points Handicap Tournament

The Points Handicap field grew by one when Tim Guo joined the competition - nice to see Tim and also nice to move to an even number of players and eliminate the bye.

Scratch player John D'Bais remains undefeated on 4 points but is still 1½ behind Hughie Winsor with two rounds to play. The tournament will conclude next Monday night, October 26.

Sixteen players gathered at Laurieton for a one-day rapid event on Sunday, October 18, with the special intention of saying thanks to one of chess's gentlemen. Endel Lane has organised chess on the Mid North Coast for many years, having been involved with Taree and Laurieton clubs as well as running school tournaments. The group offered its gratitude with a small presentation, including best wishes from several players unable to attend, and plenty of mud cake. The open winner was Mike Canfell and divisional winners were Mike Weltner and Helen Aylwin. Mingara Chess Club's AGM has been set for 8pm on Monday, November 9. The meetings are traditionally very quick affairs , leaving more time for the important business of playing chess. The club hopes for a strong roll-up. See Points Handicap results and draw below.

Report from Monday October 12 - Points Handicap Tournament

The first two rounds of this year's Points Handicap tournament went consistently with rating except for Gary Losh's win over Tony Eves, which was an evenly matched affair until Tony began to run short of time.

Making a welcome return to the boards was John D'Bais, who joined Tony off the scratch markers. All other players received a head start with bonus points awarded according to rating.

Those looking for a day out on Sunday, October 18, might consider a run to Laurieton for one of Endel Lane's one-day rapid events. The tournament is set for Laurieton Ex-Servicemen's Club with a 10am roll-up and probably an entry fee of about $10 (all fees to be returned as prize-money).

Five more juniors - McCoy and Mason Beeby, Michael Burke, Jack Perry and Jayden Robinson - each earned their Level 1 Achievement Awards on the groups final Wednesday before the school holidays. The Wednesday group will resume after the holidays on October 21 in Legends Function Room from 5-6pm. If any senior players are looking for a rewarding experience, we can always use more helpers.
