| In Diagram 10, Black has just played Qf4 and is now crying with regret. The game is over because White has no legal move. Moving the king to any of the crossed squares would be moving into check and this is not allowed under the Laws of Chess. But White is not in checkmate because the king is not in check. The result is a draw and this particular kind of draw is called a "stalemate". A queen and king can always force checkmate against a lone king. In our example, Black has thrown away a win by carelessly creating a stalemate position. | ![]() | |
